Qualification purpose:
The OAL Level 3 Award in Health and Safety in the Workplace provides learners with a thorough understanding of health and safety, especially the importance of monitoring staff and controls. The objectives of the qualification include meeting relevant programmes of learning, supporting a role in the workplace and giving learners personal growth and engagement in learning.The qualification introduces the requirements for a structured management approach to health and safety and the key factors in implementing health and safety policy. It is aimed at any one working in a supervisory position.The supervisor has an important role in influencing, monitoring and training employees in order to reduce the frequency of accidents and illness. They also are in a good position to ensure that managers are supported in raising health and safety standards.

Who is this qualification for?
The qualification will benefit everyone working in a supervisory position. Accidents and illness can result in disability, death or incapacity for work. The supervisor is in an ideal position to influence, monitor and train employees. They can also ensure that managers are informed, persuaded, encouraged or pressured into providing for better health and safety standards.
Entry requirements
There are no formal entry requirements for learners selecting this qualification. However, centres must ensure that learners have the potential and opportunity to achieve the qualification successfully. This qualification is not approved for use by learners under the age of 16 years and OAL cannot accept any registrations for learners in this age group.

Qualification achievement
This qualification is made up of a unit of assessment that is mandatory. The units ia allocated a credit value which provides an indication of the size of the units in terms of learning hours, 1 credit = 10 learning hours. The unit also has an assigned Guided Learning Hours (GLH), which indicate the average number of hours a learner may require guidance and support from teaching, learning and assessment professionals.
Learners must achieve the mandatory unit to achieve the qualification at a Pass grade. The unit sets out the things learners need to know and understand. These are described in Learning Outcomes in the unit of assessment. The Learning Outcomes are defined by Assessment Criteria and these criteria must be assessed successfully for a learner to achieve the unit.
Achievement of the mandatory unit will mean the qualification has been completed, and will be subject to approval of a claim for certification, OAL will issue a certificate complete with the learner’s name, the qualification title and the credits achieved.Centres must ensure they understand all qualification requirements prior to the registration of learners and prior to carrying out assessment of learners of the qualification. Assessment of learners must not take place prior to the registration date of the learner with OAL. Centres must retain copies of learner’s assessment records for at least three years after certification. Registration and certification fees may be subject to change. Centres should be fully aware of registration and certification end dates to ensure learners are not disadvantaged.

External quality assurance of assessment and internal quality assurance within approved centres is provided by OAL. This qualification is not graded; achievement certificates for this Award are issued on the basis of awarding a pass only.
